The man behind the Warriors’s success

When we think about the Warriors we think about Steph Curry, Klay Thompson or even Kevin Durant, but the team that dominated the NBA from 2015 to 2019 was different that other dynasties. Lots of their key players were drafted, and usually in very low picks. How did the Warriors built a 73-9 team then? One of the biggest reasons is this guy.

Robert Michael Myers (Bob Myers) was born on March 31, 1975 in the San Francisco Bay Area. At Monte Vista high school, he lettered in basketball but only a junior college showed interest in him. He attended UCLA and majored in business and economics and he made the Bruins team. He earned an athletic scolarship in the 1994-1995 season, where he only scored in the final game, and he only averaged 0,3 points. Even so, his playing time increased, and by his junior year, he added 25 pounds (11 kg) of muscle and stood at 6,7 feet (2,01 m). Against Oregon, he had his best game, with a career high 20 points in 22 minutes. UCLA advanced to the Elite Eight and Myers even started some few games. After the season, he didn´t go to Europe and that ended his career.

In april of 2011 was hired as General Manager assistant for the Golden State Warriors. He was supposed to learn from Larry Riley (Team GM at that time) for some years, but 12 months later, he became the General Manager. In his first Draft, he made great picks (Harrison Barnes in the 7th pick, and Draymond Green, a key player to the Warriors, in the 35th pick). That year, Golden State had a strong year, reaching the second round, where they lost to the eventual champions, the Spurs. In the 2013-2014 season, he signed Andre Iguodala, and Andrew Bogut signed a contract extension. Those two were very important in the dynasty. But in that season they lost in the first round against the Clippers.

In the 2014-2015 season, Mark Jackson was fired and Steve Kerr was hired, and Shaun Livingston came to help. In that season, Steph Curry won the MVP and he led the Warriors to win their first championship in 40 years. The next season, David Lee was traded and we all know what the Warriors did that year. They won 73 games but they couldn´t win the Finals. The next year, Golden State broke the NBA and they signed Kevin Durant. The Warriors dominated the next 2 years. After the 2019 season and the Warriors defeat, KD left, but Bob answered and he signed D'Angelo Rusell, who eventually got traded for Andrew Wiggins. That year, the Warriors had a terrible season, because of the Curry and Thompson injuries, and they had the worst record in the NBA (15-50). In the draft lottery, they got the 2nd pick, which they used to sign James Wiseman.

That´s is the life of Bob Myers, the genius that made the Warriors a great team.
